A favourite shop has been trading in York for 40 years – and the manager is certain it will still be in business in 40 years from now.
The great and the good from across the city gathered in Fenwick York to mark the anniversary.
It opened with the Coppergate Centre in 1984.
The department store has been a favourite of shoppers from York and visitors from around the world since.
After the shop closed last night, it hosted a birthday soiree in its stylish Coppergate Kitchen restaurant.
Guests mingled in the restaurant decorated with balloons in Fenwick’s green and white colours. A centrepiece cake had been made for the occasion.
Store manager Rebecca Elcock greeted guests and made a speech. She then told YorkMix why Fenwick York had been such a long-running success.
“We are always looking to introduce new, exciting and exclusive brands, and we source these locally, nationally and internationally.
“So I think we’re always looking for something that’s unique and truly unique to our guests.
“And we pride ourselves on being here for whatever you need. It’s our great, famous hospitality that really draws our guests to come back time and time again.”
So what’s new at the shop?
“We have changed a lot of our products downstairs in our toy department. We’ve added in a new brand called Forever New – you can be 16 or you could be 60 buying that brand.
“But the biggest news is, last week, we introduced Trinny London, and we are the only brand to have Trinity London outside of Manchester and Newcastle.”
Rebecca praised her team: “I’ve got an amazing team. We really do call ourselves the Fenwick family.
“I’ve been with the brand for 34 years, and every day is a different day, and I’m only as good as my team. And my team at the moment are absolutely brilliant.”
And she promised more big news was coming.
“We’ve got lots of new things for 2025 that I can’t really discuss with you – but it’s very exciting, and it’ll be a first for York again.”
