A York shop, appreciated by customers for its affordability, has shut after decades of trading.
And a leading councillor is now urging that a similar retailer is found to replace it.
Farmfoods on Front Street in Acomb closed at the weekend after more than 30 years in business.
The frozen food specialist was one of Acomb’s longest-established shops. Some residents wanted to campaign to save it, but the closure was a done deal.
Nationally, Farmfoods has changed its business strategy. It is now closing some of its smaller shops and focusing its business on larger stores. The one at Clifton Moor remains open.
Westfield ward councillor Andrew Waller told YorkMix: “I am concerned about the loss of an affordable shop like Farmfoods.
“And it has had a big impact on the staff, many of whom have worked there for years.
“I have contacted the council’s economic development team to ask that the empty shop be used for a similar use in future, so it adds to the day-to-day shopping experience and helps keep the vibrant atmosphere of Front Street.”
The empty Front Street store is now being marketed by Garness Jones.
It has a retail area of 5,238 sq ft and a rent of £55K per year, alongside more than £19,000 in annual business rates.
Acomb residents have been discussing what they do – and don’t – want in its place. Here are some of their comments shared on Facebook.
- Farmfoods is a huge loss for those who rely on cheaper food shopping in Acomb
- Peacocks is now Herons… Dewhurst Butchers, Eastwoods frozen food shop, Weigh & Save all gone… where does this end?
- We really need a decent fruit and veg shop (not the really expensive one that’s a cafe), fresh fish shop etc. Not another nail bar, bookies, or charity shop, please
- Mini Aldi?
