Three flood warnings remain in place for York and North Yorkshire this afternoon (Monday).

Three of the warnings are for York, but the River Ouse is expected to peak soon.

It follows Storm Bert, which brought more than 80% of November’s average monthly rainfall in less than 48 hours over the weekend.

The flood warnings are:

  • River Ouse at York – riverside properties – affecting properties on King’s Staith in York and riverside areas through York from Lendal Bridge to Millennium Bridge
  • River Ouse at York – St George’s Field and Queen’s Staith – affecting properties along Queen’s Staith, on South Esplanade, Friars Terrace and Tower Place, and land at St George’s Field carpark and Rowntree Park
  • River Ouse at Naburn Lock – affecting locations near the River Ouse, with low lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around Naburn Lock Buildings and Lock Cottages.

St George’s Field car park has reopened after being shut earlier. But Rowntree Park remains closed. Most of York is open as normal.

The River Ouse had reached 3.4m high at 7am – anything above 3m can lead to flooding of riverside properties. It has since started to drop.

There are also three flood alerts in place across North Yorkshire:

  • Upper River Ouse
  • Lower River Ure
  • River Wiske and other tributaries of the River Swale.

City of York Council said on X: “River levels may be high in York over the next couple of days as a result of heavy rainfall and snow from upstream, but the city is still very much open for business.”

York is set for a much drier week, with tomorrow being the coldest night when temperatures are set to drop to -1°C.
