Some have deemed 2024 ‘the year of horror films’ due to the release of so many scarily memorable movies.
And there are plenty of movies to chill and thrill in York during the spooky season.
So take a trip to your nearest cinema and treat yourself to a hair-raising night as Halloween approaches…
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
The long-awaited sequel to Tim Burton classic Beetlejuice is finally here, 36 years after the original was released.
The film follows a now grown-up Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) returning home to Winter River after a family tragedy. However, she is now faced with the challenge that her teenage daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), has bestowed upon them by accidentally opening the portal to the afterlife.
This is a great film to watch if you want to feel nostalgic, have fun and enjoy yourself with your family. It is definitely a more light-hearted option if you are not into chilling scenes and jump scares.
You can watch Beetlejuice Beetlejuice at Everyman York on Blossom Street and Vue Clifton Moor.
The Substance
The Substance centers around a fading star, Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore), who is fired from her hit aerobics show by an executive (Dennis Quaid), intending to replace her with someone young.
This encourages Elisabeth to use a product called The Substance. This serum temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself and allows her to continue working in the industry.
However, Elisabeth’s strong desire to stay youthful comes with unexpected and frightening side effects.
If you’d enjoy a film exploring the darker, more toxic side of the entertainment industry, The Substance explores this subject in a horrifying way.
Watch at Cineworld, Vangarde York.
Speak No Evil
This American remake of Speak no evil starring James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis brings you on a journey with an American family.
They are invited to stay the weekend at a British family’s charming estate in the countryside, but their dream holiday gradually turns out to be a living nightmare as their hosts’ sinister nature reveals itself.
If you are more of a psychological thriller fan, this is a great option for you. ‘Speak No Evil’ will have your palms sweating from adrenaline and will cause you to wonder how such evil could exist in humans.
Head to Vue Cinema at Clifton Moor to watch this one.
Terrifier 3
The Terrifier trilogy is incredibly gory and brutal, forcing most of is to look away for our own sanity.
Terrifier 3 follows up on the two siblings Sienna Shaw (Lauren LaVera) and Jacob Shaw (Elliott Fullam) who narrowly escaped Art the clown (David Howard Thornton) in the previous film. Whilst they learn to rebuild their lives as Christmas approaches, Art the clown reappears to terrify them once again.
This slasher film is what you will want to watch on a spooky evening if you enjoy gruesome, chaotic and blood-soaking horrors. Be warned – it is incredibly graphic.
Watch if you dare at Cineworld, Vangarde York.
Smile 2
Hold on tight as the highly anticipated Smile 2 has been released in cinemas.
This brings you into the life of Skye Riley (Naomi Scott), a global pop sensation who is getting ready to begin her world tour a year after experiencing a tragic accident.
Her already hectic life turns upside down when she finds herself encountering unexplainable events and a petrifying entity.
If you enjoyed the first Smile, you will definitely love the sequel. The intensity and stakes are much higher in this sequel and will have you questioning what is real or fake throughout the film, losing your own mind in the process.
You can watch Smile 2 at the Everyman York on Blossom Street.
