Monk Park Farm took to social media yesterday to announce they have some piglets up for sale.
The micro pigs have been at the Thirsk farm attraction for a little while now, but are looking for their ‘forever home’.
There’s four to choose from, all male and ranging in different colours and personalities. Unlike commercial pigs, micro pigs are more like a ‘pet pig’ and have been bred to stay small.
The post on Facebook read: “We have 4 castrated boy Piglets that are looking for a loving home, they are so tame and easy to handle.”
YorkMix spoke to Mark Navin, general manager at Monk Park Farm, who told us the reason why the piglets are flying the nest. “We have many pigs, including many who are pregnant and ready to give birth.
“We’ve spent a lot of time taming these pigs and they make great pets, so it’s a great opportunity for other people to share!”
Mark enthused that each piglet sold isn’t just sold to anyone, the buyers have to go through a strict vetting process to ensure they’re well looked after.
“First of all, you’ve got to be registered with the government to be keeping pigs, we want to see pictures and evidence of where they’re going.
“People need a good outdoor enclosure, they couldn’t really just go in a garden, it’s not fair as they need room to roam. People also need to have a basic understanding of pigs. And obviously, we’re here to help them through it.” He told us.
Despite commercial pigs often being nervous of humans, Mark informed us that micro pigs are full of character, “They’re very friendly, very tame, and they love human interaction.
“They’re happy for their belly to be stroked, happy to be picked up and cuddled too.”
Mark can vouch for this, as he has a pet micro pig at home, “we’ve got one that lives in the house called Penny who actually is like a dog, she’ll sit for treats!”
The micro pigs are on sale for £300 each, or £550 for two.
