A famous US fast food restaurant looks set to be heading to York.
Burger chain Wendy’s wants to move into the former TM Lewin on St Sampsons Square.
“The existing property comprises of an empty retail unit covering the ground, first and second floor,” planning documents state.
“The applications are to facilitate the occupation of this unit, previously a TM Lewin retail shop, with a Wendy’s Restaurant.
“Wendy’s is a well-known burger chain making a return to the United kingdom after an absence since 2000.”
Under the plans, new signage would be put on the former shirt store.
“There will be a total of 19 covers on the ground floor and 40 on the first floor,” planning documents say.
According to the planning documents, the opening hours will be from 7am-11pm Monday to Sunday. It will employ 40 staff, 20 full time and 20 part time.
Wendy’s was founded by Dave Thomas in Columbus, Ohio, in 1969.
It has been expanding in the UK recently, with branches opening in Leeds and Bridlington.
Number 3 St Sampsons Square is Grade II-listed and was built in the late 18th century.
A heritage document said: “A thoughtful and sensitive approach will contribute to the building’s preservation and respect its historical and architectural significance to the city of York.
“Prioritising restoration, along with respectful adaptation, the proposed Wendy’s restaurant can ensure that the special character of the building is both enhanced and maintained for years to come in the future.”
