The average house price there is just under £400,000 – but that might well increase now.
Because a village just 12 miles from York has been named among Britain’s top 20 ‘secret villages’.
The list was compiled by The Sunday Times, aiming to highlight “20 villages that aren’t well known across the country but are always in demand among those in the know”.
And the only one in Yorkshire is Bishop Wilton. The village is east of Stamford Bridge along the A166.
According to the village community shop’s website, it is “an extraordinary village: not only is it beautiful but much of its real appeal rests on its sense of community”.
“Bishop Wilton is certainly good looking, with red-tiled roofs, lush grass verges around a burbling stream, all overlooked by the elegant outline of St Edith’s Church,” The Times writes.
“You’ll find the community volunteering in the shop and café — opened in 2020 after an enthusiastic fundraising campaign — or helping to marshal the 2,000 visitors who turn up to the annual show.

“The Fleece Inn promises open fires, home-cooked food and Yorkshire ales, there’s a village primary and York’s high-achieving secondaries — along with its fast trains, jobs, shops and restaurants — are less than a half-hour drive away along the A166.”
Fancy moving there? According to the paper, period cottages start at about £260,000 but you need £500,000 for a family-sized four-bedroom home.
