Thousands of runners were cheered on by huge crowds at the fantastic York 10K today (Sunday).
Mixing fun and fundraising in equal measure, six thousand runners of all ages took to our ancient streets in one of York’s biggest mass participation events.
Organised by Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All, the UK’s largest not for profit sporting events company, the 10K started at 09.30am on Knavesmre.
YorkMix‘s Laura Castle was master of ceremonies, and counted the runners down as they set off in spectacular style.

Known as Yorkshire’s most scenic 10K and popular for its fast and flat course, the route explored some of the city’s most historic landmarks, including the ancient city walls, Clifford’s Tower and York Minster.
For the competitive runners, it was a hard-fought contest.
In the men’s race, Gavin Chalmers of Leeds City Athletic Club triumphed with a time of 00:31:49. Adam Baker was runner up in a time of 00:32:18 and Adam Daniel came third in 00:32:35.
Eleanor Baker of Barnsley Athletic Club was first to the finish line in an impressive time of 00:34:37 in the women’s race. She was pushed all the way by runner up Emily Soanes and Julie Briscoe, who clocked 00:35:54 and 00:36:46 respectively.
Participants had been encouraged to fundraise for a chosen charity or for one of the event’s partner charities:
- the Jane Tomlinson Appeal
- St Leonard’s Hospice
- York Against Cancer
- Refugee Action York
- RSPCA York & Harrogate & District Branch
- Saint Catherine’s
- Changing Lives
- The Island
- Menfulness
- and the York Down Syndrome Support Group.
Spectators lined the streets to roar everyone on their way.
Entertainment groups Some Voices, Lucy’s Pop Choir and the Rock Choir helped to create a carnival atmosphere throughout the morning.
The York Mini and Junior runs, sponsored by Xerox Business Solutions, followed later. Children from the ages of 3 to 15 took part in an uplifting display of energy, determination and enjoyment.
What they said
