It used to echo to the phrase: “Cashier number four please.”
Now, though, you are more likely to hear “How would you like that done?” – as York’s Crown Post Office officially becomes a steak restaurant.
The Miller & Carter Steakhouse officially opens its doors to the public at the converted Lendal post office tomorrow (Friday, 28 June).
But it has already cooked up a storm in a series of soft openings to specially invited guests.
As you might expect, the a la carte menu is big on its beef. You can get an 8oz 30-day aged fillet steak for £35.50. Or a 50-day aged Black Angus Sirloin 8oz for £27.95.
A cheese and bacon burger will set you back £17.95, while the sea bass is £22.75.
There are plant-based options, a children’s menu and a three-course Sunday menu for £34.50. As for drinks you can enjoy two cocktails for £14.
There’s also a Monday-Wednesday special offer – a steak and a cocktail for £20.

This has been one of York’s longest waits for a restaurant. It was back in 2019 whe plans were first revealed to transform the ground and first floor of the Lendal building into a steakhouse.
It followed the controversial decision by the Post Office to sell up and transfer the branch into WH Smith on Coney Street.
Built in 1884 by Henry Tanner it was one of the last surviving late-Victorian purpose-built post offices still in use.

New owners Mitchells & Butler were granted planning permission for the restaurant at the end of 2019.
Then the pandemic intervened.
Five years on, it has finally opened, offering 140 covers with an additional seven bar tables.
The company say the renovation has given the former post office “a warm, modern new look”.
General manager Neil Grant said: “The site has undergone a truly amazing transformation from the former Post Office and the team and I hope that everyone loves the new look as much as we do!

“The arrival of the new restaurant is an incredible opportunity not only for the brand, but for the local area as well and we can’t wait to welcome everyone to experience the Miller & Carter York.
“Our whole team is obsessed with steak, and we are looking to recruit people who share our love for excellent quality.
“If you love steak as much as we do, please do get in touch as we’re always looking to attract applicants with enthusiasm to join the team and become official ‘Steak Geeks’.”

The new destination means this corner of St Helen’s Square is quite the spot for red meat enthusiasts.
The Tomahawk Cocktail Bar and Steakhouse, located between the Mansion House and the new Miller & Carter, opened for business in August 2020.
