A pub near York has shut suddenly – the second time it has closed in 18 months.
The White Swan Inn is on the A19 at Deighton, about five miles south of York city centre, near Escrick.
It is now closed – and it has emerged that the pub has been sold.
It previously shut without notice back in January 2023. But by March 2023 it was back open again, under the stewardship of Ann and Dave.
In April 2023, they posted this message on Facebook: “A little dicky bird has told us that the word on the street is we are working for a previous management, so there are quite a few people who won’t come in.
“To set the record straight, we work for Marston’s, and the business is 100% nothing to do with any past management.
“All the food is cooked on site in our recently 5-star hygiene rated kitchen. Our ensuite letting rooms will be up and running from the 1st of May. Ann and Dave look forward to welcoming customers old and new.”
Thanks to the new menu and various pub events the custom began to build again.
However, it emerged that Marston’s had put the White Swan up for sale, along with 60 more of its 1,400-strong pub estate.
And last month, the pub shut again – this time possibly for good.

On 21 May, this message was posted on the White Swan Facebook page: “Dave, Ann & all the staff would like to thank all the customers that have supported us over the past 14 months here at The White Swan Deighton.
“Unfortunately the time has come, we will be closing the doors and cease trading this Sunday at 6pm. All of us have really appreciated the support we have received. For the last time, thank you.”
A message at the top of the page says: “The White Swan Deighton has permanently ceased trading. We are no longer open to the general public. All Booking.com guest have been messaged to request cancellation of their booking.”
Customers were dismayed. “Oh no so sorry to hear this,” one said. Another said simply: “Not again!”
YorkMix contacted Marston’s about the situation. A spokesperson told us: “The White Swan, Deighton has been sold. We understand it will continue to operate as a pub.”
We have contacted the previous managers and will update if we hear back.
