A new £2.6m medical centre will open in North Yorkshire next month – to meet the needs of a growing population in the area.
The refurbished and extended Sherburn Group Practice in Sherburn-in-Elmet will be opened by former Calendar presenter Christine Talbot.
Described as a “a “smart, spacious, and accessible new healthcare facility”, the extension and new floor has created a total of 19 consultation rooms.
There are also waiting rooms on three floors and lift access.
Facilities include urgent care, phlebotomy services, retinal screening and ultrasound scanning.
A second phase, involving the re-opening of the Old Hungate Hospital building on the corner of Finkle Hill and Kirkgate, will be completed in August this year. It will accommodate further services, including sexual health, physiotherapy and facilities for district nurses.
The scheme was funded with £1 million from the NHS, £750,000 from Selby District Council, additional Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) as well as contribution from the practice partners.
The practice in Beech Grove was opened in 1976 serving 4,000 patients in Sherburn-in-Elmet and surrounding villages.
That number has risen to almost 12,000 today and is expected to increase by several more thousand due to housing programmes in the area.
Senior partner and GP Dr Catriona Osman said: “Beech Grove surgery has been in the planning stage for six years and the building stage for 18 months.
“During that time, we have squeezed ourselves in to The Old Hungate Hospital in order to continue to provide a high standard of care.”
She added: “This has future-proofed Sherburn Group Practice to allow us to provide excellent care to our community into the future.”
Along with Christine Talbot, the opening ceremony will see Dr Andrew Peel, one of its longest serving former doctors, officially cutting the ribbon on Monday 3 June at 1pm.
All the hard-working medical team from the practice will also be attending, as well as the parliamentary candidate for the Selby constituency Kier Mather along with some of those that have made the project possible.
