It was once home to the man who ran the Rowntree factory.
Now, however, Beverley House and its grounds are being redeveloped into 21 homes.
The Shipton Road estate was bought from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation by Harrogate developer Inglehurst Property in 2021.
Originally constructed in the late 19th century, Beverley House became a family residence for the Rowntree’s factory manager. It later served as offices for the Joseph Rowntree Trust and the Local Government Ombudsmen.
Designed by award-winning York-based architect Vincent & Partners, the new development features homes in three new buildings surrounding a communal courtyard.
Beverley House history
Built in Victorian times, the 1911 census lists the 12-roomed house as being occupied by Thomas Appleton, general manager at the Cocoa Works, his wife Hannah, a cook and housemaid. It was purchased because it adjoined the Homestead and Ouse Lea.
After the war, it was divided into three flats, each with its own separate entrance. Two additional wings were added to the building by the architect, Richard Fraser, to provide office space for the three Joseph Rowntree Trusts in addition to a shared boardroom, library and office machine room.
The building was leased to the Local Government Ombudsmen in 1990.

Now North Yorkshire-based property agent Stephensons has been appointed to market the one, two and three bed properties with prices starting from £295,000.
In a tribute to the site’s Rowntree heritage, the three new buildings have been named Appleton House, Seebohm Lodge, and Homestead View, while the site as a whole is now known as Beverley Court. Beverley House will keep its historic name.
Oliver Newby from Stephensons said: “These stunning new homes are in an unparalleled location, on the doorstep of Homestead Park, and close to everything that Shipton Road has to offer.
“They offer the epitome of luxury lifestyle, and the development seamlessly blends the revitalisation of the original Beverley House with the creation of new apartments, complementing the history of the site.
“We have received significant ‘off market’ interest in the properties, with reservations already being made.”
Matthew Newton from Inglehurst Property added: “We are really excited with the progress to transform this magnificent building into bespoke homes that are all unique.”
Completion of the development is expected by the end of this year and more information can be found here.
