The A19 was shut for 12 hours after a serious crash on Tuesday.

But the road reopened both ways at 3.41am on Wednesday and traffic is running normally again.

The collision was on the A19 at Kirby Sigston, shutting the road both ways.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said on Tuesday afternoon: “Diversions are in place and the road is likely to be closed for some time.

“Please avoid the area and use alternatives routes whilst emergency services respond.”

National Highways said: “Drivers in North Yorkshire are advised that delays are expected throughout this afternoon’s peak traffic period following a serious collision on the A19.

“The northbound and southbound carriageways between the A19’s junctions with the A684 (Northallerton) and the A61 (Thornbrough) are currently closed following the incident which occurred just after 3.30pm today.

“Air ambulance, emergency services and National Highways traffic officers were called to the scene.

“Traffic caught within the closure is now being turned at a turning point within the central reservation.”

The AA reports: “Road closed and queueing traffic due to crash on A19 both ways from A61 Stockton Road to A684 (the Northallerton turn off).

“Ongoing since around 4pm. Detour in operation – the A684 towards Northallerton, the A167 and the A168 towards South Kilvington.”

Full diversion routes were put in place.
