Safety improvements will be made on 17 of England’s deadliest roads – including one in North Yorkshire, the Department for Transport (DfT) has announced.

Improvements to the A19 are designed to prevent around 11 fatal and serious injuries over 20 years.

A total of £2.96m in funding for North Yorkshire Council – along with the same amount for Doncaster Council – will be invested in safety measures designed to deliver an 8.5% reduction in in fatal and serious injuries on the A19.

The work will include designing new junctions and roundabouts, clearer signage and road markings, and improved pedestrian crossings and cycle lanes.

A total of £38.3 million has been allocated to council road safety improvement projects across the UK.

Dr Suzy Charman, executive director of the Road Safety Foundation charity, said: “The Safer Roads Fund is a transformational initiative for road safety and for the local authorities receiving funds.

“It makes it possible for road safety teams across the country to proactively address risk of death and serious injury for all road users on these routes.”
