Plans are in to create a large gym at Monks Cross Shopping Park in York.
Under the proposals, two empty units would be merged, and a mezzanine floor constructed that spans both.
That would create an area of more than 22,000 sq ft.
Everlast Gyms is the operator that wants into the units, which are next to JD Sports at Monks Cross.
They used to house H&M and Evans before they closed in 2018.
The gym would improve “the commercial viability and sustainability of the retail park by creating a unit for which there is tenant demand and widening the offer at the park with increase potential for linked trips,” say planning documents.
According to the application, the typical weekday opening hours are expected to be 6am to 10pm, except Fridays when the closing time is 9pm. Weekend operational hours would be 8am to 6pm.
Everlast operates around 60 gyms nationally. It is owned by the Fraser Group and typically has around 3,000 members per gym.
On its website, Everlast Gyms says it provides “ground-breaking fitness clubs that incorporate a hybrid of boutique group training studios and a traditional gym floor, with extensive functional zones, and ground-breaking studios providing a wide range of fitness classes”.
