Did you hear it? Did you feel it?

Half of York is talking about the loud bang that reverberated around the city late this morning (Monday).

It shook people and their houses and had everyone asking: What was it?

Among those to have heard the bang was Emma Krousti. She lives at Warthill and was at home when it happened.

“About ten to 12, we heard a really loud bang. I thought either something had exploded in the house or outside, or a tree had fallen down or something.

“It felt very, very near.

RAF jets scramble to help passenger plane – and cause York’s sonic boom

“My son’s off school poorly. We walked round the house to see if everything was OK. It was all fine.

“Then somebody messaged on the village WhatsApp group to ask, has anybody heard that big bang?

“And it’s been heard as far away as Haxby and Strensall. People were saying their houses were shaking a little bit – it felt like an explosion. It was very dramatic.”

Many people took to social media to ask what was going on. On Facebook, one resident said: “I genuinely nearly got in the prone position on the floor!”

This map from PlaneFinder shows a potential culprit for a sonic boom – clocked at precisely 11.53am on Monday

Fortunately none of the emergency services are reporting anything like an explosion in our area.

Instead the most likely culprit is a sonic boom caused by aircraft over North Yorkshire.

Plane enthusiasts from York speculated that the culprit could be a Eurofighter Typhoon.

The PlaneFinder website showed two Typhoons overflying the region just before noon today.

One aviation enthusiast said: “The second aircraft speed is shown peaking around 668 knots (about 768mph) at 41,000 feet between York and Ripon.

“The speed of sound at this altitude is approximately 670 knots so it’s likely this would have created a sonic boom.”
