Two York attractions are closed today (Christmas Eve), victims of the unusual winter weather.
Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland Ice Rink at the York Designer Outlet is shut for the full day.
And Wharton’s Wonderland on Rufforth Airfield has also announced it is closed.
A yellow warning for strong winds covering York and North Yorkshire runs from 8am to 10pm today. That, and the unseasonably mild weather – the temperature is expected to rise to 14°C – is the reason for The Ice Factor closing.
The popular attraction, which has been part of York’s Christmas for 18 years, says it has “never experienced the unprecedented high temperatures and high winds that it has this December”.
Georgi Wood, Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland event organiser, said: “We are absolutely devastated to have to make the decision to close Christmas Eve.
“It is our favourite day of the season and we love welcoming so many families and being part of their Christmas traditions.
“We only hope that by letting people know now, that they can plan their day.’’
She added: “Our bigger and better funfair, along with our rink-side chalet and terrace has been a huge hit this year and will be open, so please do come and enjoy it and finish some last minute shopping in the outlet.’’
The funfair and rink-side Chalet Cafe will be open from 10am to 5pm on Christmas Eve. The Ice Factor plans to reopen as usual on Boxing Day and will be at McArthurGlen Designer Outlet York until Sunday 7 January.

Earlier today, Wharton’s Wonderland had said it planned to stay open, adding: “We are not wanting children to be disappointed on Christmas Eve so we are trying our hardest to stay open to avoid any tears.”
But at 10.29am, the attraction had to admit defeat, posting: “Unfortunately we have had to close.
“We will email everyone with bookings and refund them.”
