Storm Pia has arrived bringing with it gusts of up to 76mph in North Yorkshire.
York and North Yorkshire are covered by a yellow weather warning for strong winds lasting till 9pm tonight (Thursday).
Tree falls have blocked a York road and the city walls this morning.
Thanet Road was closed after a tree came down. It has since been removed and the road reopened.
However a section of the city walls is closed after another tree fall.
City of York Council posted on social media: “Unfortunately, the section of the city walls between Jewbury and Monk Bar because of a fallen tree.
“The other sections of the walls are still open and there are plenty of things to see and do in the city centre.”
The weather is having an impact on rail services. LNER said services between Edinburgh and Newcastle are subject to speed restrictions extending journey times between the two locations by up to 30 minutes.
At 7.43am, Northern Trains posted on X: “Due to a tree blocking the railway between Garforth and Church Fenton all lines are blocked.
“Network Rail engineers have been requested to attend and carry out further assessments.”
Issuing “do not travel” advice, TransPennine Express asked customers to delay their journeys in and out of Edinburgh until after 3pm.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service has issued advice on how to keep safe in the difficult conditions.
They say:
- Be aware of your surroundings and any flying debris which could cause injury or danger to life
- Tiles may be blown from roofs of buildings. If your car is parked near to a building with a tiled roof, it may be worth considering an alternative parking space.
- Longer journey times and cancellations may occur, including road, rail, air and ferry services – please check your route and mode of transport before leaving
- Power cuts are not likely, but may still occur, and could effect other services such as mobile phone coverage. Be prepared for this.
- Injuries and danger to life is higher from large waves and beach material being thrown on to coastal roads, sea fronts and properties.
