Everyone who walks down Parliament Street regularly will have seen Vasile, the well-known Big Issue seller, dancing and waving at passers-by.
Residents and tourists usually smile and wave back.
However, this morning (Tuesday 10 October), he sat dejectedly on Parliament Street.
He told YorkMix that concerned regulars had approached him to ask why his eyes were not bright and he was not dancing.
He explained that a black rucksack containing his passport and card machine to take payment for the magazines he sells, had been stolen.
The Police, he said were looking for it and asked York people to do the same.
Vasile, who is originally from Romania, is always friendly, and has been selling the Big Issue magazine on this pitch for the last 4-5 years.
