A York husband and father is recovering after suffering a terrifying ordeal in New York.

Cameron Robertson, 41, from Acomb, was on holiday with his wife Jill in the US city when he hit with two bullets shot by gunmen in hoodies and masks.

It happened on 17 September after the couple flew out to the States for a four-day break.

They were caught in crossfire while walking back to their hotel after watching a gig at music venue Brooklyn Steel.

Cameron was hit twice. He wrote on Instagram: “I feel extremely lucky that both bullets didn’t do any major damage, I’m just in a bit of pain.

“The cops said about ten shots were fired off so could have been a whole lot worse.

“One bullet went straight through my bicep and the other went in my quad and is just under the skin at the back of my thigh.”

His wife put pressure on the wound, and he gave “massive thanks to Jill for her training kicking in and stopped me bleeding out on the floor”.

He was rushed to Kings County Hospital Center in New York where he was treated for the gunshot wounds.

Cameron, who has two sons, was allowed to leave the hospital that day and flew back to the UK the same night. His insurance covered the $16,000 bill for his US medical treatment.

He has since had surgery to remove the bullet from his leg.

He told YorkMix he felt even more lucky to be alive after the operation. “The surgeons extracted the bullet on Saturday afternoon and have liaised with the police in North Yorkshire who are sending it to the detectives in NYPD.

“After getting the bullet removed I felt even more fortunate than I had before that I hadn’t lost my leg or worse my life.

“The bullet was a hollow point designed to do maximum damage and luckily didn’t engage. Had it engaged it would have splintered off hitting my femur and main artery!”

New York detectives are searching for two males in hoodies and masks who “discharged multiple rounds” and shot Cameron twice before leaving in a grey car.
