A main road in North Yorkshire remains closed today (Tuesday) after a lorry fire last night.
Emergency services were called to the fire on the A63 between the Wishing Well roundabout and Greencore, Selby at about 5.20pm.
North Yorkshire Police said: “In order for all emergency services to work safely, the road is currently closed.
The location of the fire
“Due to the contents on board the lorry, the road will be closed for some time. Please expect delays until late this evening/early morning.
“Diversions will be put in place shortly by the local authority. Please find an alternative route.
“Thank you for your patience.”
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Crews from Selby and Tadcaster have been called an axle on fire on a tanker carrying wheat protein.
“This resulted in fire, heat and smoke damage to the trailer, tanker and cab. Crews used four breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets and a thermal imaging camera.
“The cause is believed to be an overheated wheel.”
Nearby residents raised health questions about the fire. Commenting on the police Facebook post, one asked: “What was on board the lorry? Is it hazardous to our health?”
Another said: “This is definitely a question that should be answered, the smell of the fumes was pretty bad. I had to close my car windows. I wouldn’t like to be on the Stanor Estate.
“Hopefully the police will have given residents the appropriate action to take with the ongoing situation.”
