York City have sacked their manager Mikey Morton tonight (Monday).

It followed the 3-1 home defeat to Rochdale this afternoon.

That left City without a win so far this season and with just three points from their first six games.

It means the club are second from bottom in the National League. They are only being kept from bottom place because Southend United were docked ten points due to financial irregularities.

In a statement the club said tonight: “The club has reluctantly taken the decision to relieve Mikey Morton of his duties.

“The club wishes to place on record its sincere thanks to Mikey for his work, passion, and commitment since joining the club in February.

“We wish Mikey every success in his future career, and he will always be welcome back at the LNER community stadium. The club see Mikey as an asset and have offered him a role internally so await his decision.

“The club will now begin the process of recruiting a new first team manager.

“In the meantime, assistant manager Tony McMahon will take charge of the first team supported by first team staff.”

Morton just kept City from relegation last season after taking over from David Webb.

He was under pressure to get results after new owners Matt and Julie-Anne Uggla spent a fortune on recruiting a raft of highly-rated new players.

Tonight on X, formerly Twitter, Matt Uggla said: “Just want to say what a class act Mikey is.

“Kept his integrity all the way through. Absolutely heartbroken to have had to make this decision and think Mikey is a massive asset to the club and stays around and helps the club get to where we can be.”

The sacking came after disgruntled fans chanted “Morton out” and “You’re getting sacked in the morning.”
