One of the world’s most delicious – and controversial – small cakes is to take centre stage at a foodie festival like no other.

The humble scone, starter of a million arguments over its correct pronunciation, not to mention the cream-jam arrangement dispute – is to be celebrated at a top city attraction.

Historic Bedern Hall is to host the city’s very first SconeFest on Friday (25 August).

The event will include the opportunity to buy a scone taster plate with five unique scone flavours created in-house by former National Trust baker and scone making master Bernadette Thompson.

Guests can choose from a wide range of scones including

  • apple crumble
  • strawberry cheesecake
  • cheese & bacon, and
  • sage & onion.

There will also be one mystery scone flavour. If you can guess the mystery flavour correctly, you will be entered into a prize draw to win an afternoon tea for two at Bedern, a medieval hall dating back to the 1300s.

Hebden Bridge based teamaker Hebden Tea will be providing all the tea for the event.

You can sample some of the wide variety of tea flavours on the day, and enjoy a range of other activities including the chance to pot your own succulent in a teacup will be on offer.

Now baker at Bedern Hall, Bernadette Thompson’s scones were recently recognised as the Best National Trust Scone across the whole of England.

Sarah Merker, whose decade-long mission to sample every scone available at National Trust properties recently went viral, declared that her favourite was Bernadette’s Christmas Pudding scone, which she sampled at Treasurer’s House in York.

These same scones are now served at Bedern Hall around Christmas.

The beautiful Bedern Hall

SconeFest organiser Morgan Lee, engagement officer at Bedern Hall, said: “We are incredibly excited to open our doors for ‘SconeFest’ and we have to say it is a must visit for any scone lovers in the area.

“Anyone attending can look forward to a range of activities, and it is also a great opportunity to take in Bedern Hall’s eclectic 700-year history.”

Roger Lee, CEO at Bedern Hall, said: “We’re always looking to keep Bedern Hall in the public eye and develop a vision for the future of this hidden medieval gem.

“It is a great privilege to have Bernadette here for the event, and we hope everyone gets to sample some of her delicious scones.”
