Axe-throwing venue The Hilt have launched a brand new food offering – and will be serving up a selection of gourmet hotdogs and grilled cheese sandwiches.
This will be the first of a larger series of changes coming to The Hilt.
The York attraction on Goodramgate first opened in 2019, and is the city’s first axe-throwing centre.
The Hilt used to be home to the Viking-themed restaurant Odin’s Plate, which unfortunately closed last year.
But now the venue have launched their own food offering, The Hot Dog Hatch, for eat in and takeaway.
“We have an opportunity to turn The Hilt into something completely unique in York,” said manager Rich Thubron. “The Hot Dog Hatch is the first step in this transformation.
“It’s a street food bar rather than a traditional restaurant, which we feel is much more in keeping with the rest of the venue.”
The menu will feature gourmet hotdogs such as the Double Kill (with tomato and chorizo chutney, Monterey Jack cheese, bacon and chipotle mayo, £8.95 or £10.95 with fries) and the Bullseye (with caramelised red onions, pickles, mustard, ketchup and crispy onions, £7.95 or £9.95 with fries).
Also on offer will be grilled cheese sandwiches, garnished with an olive and pickled gherkin and served with fries. Go extra cheesy with the three-cheese Odin’s Onions (£7), or a bit fancier with the brie, chilli jam and sliced pear combo of the Brie’s Knees (£7.50).
There will be delicious sides available too, such as loaded fries and topped nachos.
Vegetarians and vegans won’t be left out though as almost all of the menu items can be made veggie or vegan.
“We hope to become something of a destination for people looking for high quality vegetarian and vegan food,” said Rich.

Ingredients are homemade on site or sourced from other independent Yorkshire businesses and delivered fresh throughout the week.
The Hilt currently have packages available which include an axe throwing session, followed by food and a drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) “for the complete Hilt experience”. The package is £36.99.
However, “you don’t need to be throwing axes to dine with us,” said Rich.
“We’re also keen to attract walk-ins for food.” This would apply to both eating in and the street food style takeaway.
The Hot Dog Hatch will be open Fridays 2-7pm, Saturdays 11:30am – 7pm, and Sundays 11:30am – 3:30pm – though this is subject to change.
