A busy York road is to shut for three weeks, beginning at the end of the month.
A stretch of Skeldergate will be shut for road improvement works aiming to improve cyclists’ safety.
The work area will be between Middleton Hotel and the junction with Bishopgate Street.
It will close from 8am on Monday, 31 July for three weeks, with work scheduled to finish at 6pm on Friday, 18 August.
A signed diversions will be put in place. Access for residents and businesses served by Skeldergate “will be maintained as far as is reasonably practicable although there will be no through route between Bridge Street and Bishopgate Street,” says City of York Council.
“This includes access to Cromwell Road and Fetter Lane.”
The work “will comprise modifications to the buildouts to provide cycle bypasses at which cyclists will be segregated from traffic, with accompanying priority give way arrangements to manage traffic,” the council says.
“The existing pedestrian crossings and speed humps will be retained at the buildouts.
“The alterations will serve to reduce the potential for conflict between cyclists and vehicles at the buildouts, increasing safety and amenity for cyclists using this key route.”
At the same time, repairs to the road surface will take place and a damaged gully and drain will be replaced.
“This is in response to requests made by residents and ward members to address a number of concerns about noise and vibration caused by the poor condition of the road near to the Terry Avenue junction.”
Skeldergate residents have been campaigning to cut the number of bus trips along the road.
The street was closed near its junction with Ouse Bridge earlier this year to allow Northern Gas Networks to upgrade pipes.
