Things to do

Spark York have launched a new art competition – which asks you to imagine what summer in York might look like in 100 years.

The competition is open to all York residents, of all ages and levels of experience, and invites participants to create artworks that address the theme of the climate crisis.

Spark is asking participants to envision summer in our city in 100 years while considering the visible impacts of climate change and possible urban developments.

The competition is open until 31 July.

Your artwork can be created using any visual 2D medium, including painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking and digital art. There will be two age categories: 15+ and under 15.

There will be 20 finalists selected, whose work will be showcased in an exhibition held in Spark’s SHOW space at the beginning of September.

For ten shortlisted artists (five from each category) a place on an art masterclass given by one of Spark’s resident artists will be offered.

There will also be a prize in each age category. The 15+ winner will receive a York Gift Card topped up with £100, sponsored by the York Bid. The under 15 winner will win a gift card topped up with £100 for professional art supplies.

Paulina Lewicka of Spark said: “With this art competition, we would love to get the local community involved in a conversation about the future of our beautiful city.

“Here at Spark, we believe that big change starts small, and we hope the submitted artworks will inspire us all to reflect on our lifestyles and the simple eco-friendly choices we can make that can have a significant impact on our environment in a few years.”

As well as aiming to showcase local artistic talent and to encourage creative networking, Spark hopes the contest will provide a platform to discuss the future of York and inspire us all to make changes in our own lives to build a better future for everyone.

The submissions will be judged by an expert panel made up of Spark’s resident MAKE studio artists: Dominic Brooks, Leon François Dumont, Jake Moore, Lucy Topham and Kai West.

For more information on how to enter and to see the competition terms and conditions, visit the Spark website.

Good luck!
