For some travellers, York’s rush hour has become crawl hour as roadworks have brought gridlock to the roads.

As YorkMix reported earlier this week, repairs to bridges on the A1237 have slowed traffic to a virtual standstill between the A59 and A19 roundabouts.

It has led to “every single road” in the area being gridlocked, as one resident put it. That scheme is set to run till 3 July.

And there are other roadworks slowing the city, including at Water End, Leeman Road and Tadcaster Road.

Cllr Pete Kilbane has just taken over as City of York Council’s executive member for transport after Labour won the election last month.

He said he was working to ease the traffic problems.

Cllr Kilbane said: “Labour has inherited a backlog of roadworks schemes that are now having a cumulative impact on people’s ability to get around the city.

“York’s traffic network is so stretched that major works, or an accident, has an impact across the whole city, while several will have a major impact and that’s unfortunately what some residents are now experiencing.

“We have asked officers if there are any mitigations that can be put in place immediately to ease the pain that drivers are currently feeling.

“However, with any roadworks there will be some short-term disruption, but the changes will benefit the city in the long run.”

He also said that he expected a York Local Transport Plan to be ready sooner rather than later, and that all future major roadworks schemes will involve mitigation to reduce their impact on road users.
