Roadworks are causing a daily commuter nightmare for hundreds of drivers in York.
Road users have described their exasperation at the gridlock, which is on the A1237 ring road in the north west corner of the city near Clifton Moor.
Repairs are being carried out on the Rawcliffe Ings Bridge over the River Ouse, and the Millfield Railway Bridge over the East Coast Main Line.
Work began on 29 May and is set to last five weeks. And although it is taking place at night, the road is covered by ramps to protect the surface. This means the speed limit is reduced to 30mph from the A59 and A19 roundabouts.
City of York Council warned there would be delays. But the scale of the rush hour problem is possibly worse than many anticipated, with jams across the northern section of the ring road and stretching up the A59.
Frustrated drivers have taken to social media to express their frustration.
“My house is like 2 minutes from Vue cinema and it took me 20 minutes today! Every single road is gridlocked,” said one resident on Reddit.
“The actual works is tiny, and there’s not even lights needed, but it seemed to be causing chaos when we drove past it the other way,” another wrote.
“There’s so many roundabouts on that stretch that any delay in one direction soon causes a gridlock and madness everywhere!”
A worker from McDonald’s at Clifton Moor said the problems had hit sales at the restaurant.
Others commented that drivers ‘blocking’ the outer lane to prevent others passing was making the matter worse.
“Weather permitting, the scheme will be completed by Monday 3 July,” said a City of York Council spokesperson.
