An event described as the biggest sporting celebration of climate action ever attempted in Britain will come through York next month.

Running Out of Time will see a climate baton passed more than 1,600 miles from Ben Nevis in Scotland to Big Ben in London, between 10 June and 11 July.

Thousands of runners, walkers, wheelers and cyclists will carry the baton the length of the country to inspire the nation to take collective action now to reach net zero.

And on its way, it will pass through many York and North Yorkshire landmarks.

Here are some of the Yorkshire highlights and timings:

Monday 19 June

  • Newburgh Priory Estate – 3.05pm
  • Huby Village Shop – 4.50pm
  • Haxby Memorial Hall – 6pm.

Tuesday 20 June

  • New Earswick Sports Club – 9am
  • York City Walls – 9.30am
  • Refill community café, 26 Fairfax Street, York – 10.40am
  • York Racecourse – 11am
  • Copmanthorpe Primary School – 11.25am
  • The Three Hares Inn, Bilbrough – 12pm
  • Costa Coffee, Tadcaster – 12.45pm.

Full details of the Yorkshire route here.

The relay baton has the live ‘Climate Clock’ built into it, designed by award-winning product design architects Bang Creations.

Who can run? Anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to sign-up to the relay route. They will need to be able maintain an average pace of ten minutes per mile for the duration of a stage.

Running Out of Time co-founder Dan Thompson says: “It’s taken a huge collaborative effort to get this ambitious project to the start line.

“Our aim is to highlight the incredible climate action work taking place across Britain and use the power of sport to literally connect these projects with an unbroken chain of participants.

“Running Out of Time symbolises the very essence of climate action – it’s an extraordinary, bold, ambitious plan that will only succeed because everyone has worked together. I know we can do it!”
