York musician Don Jackson has died in hospital in Turkey.

A hugely talented musician and a much-loved family man, Don was over there in order to get a life-saving liver transplant.

An amazing fundraising campaign had raised more than £50,000 towards his medical expenses. But he was never well enough to undergo surgery and died last week.

Good friend Dave Sollitt, who organised the fundraising campaign, gave a heartfelt update on the GoFundMe page.

He said: “Very sadly, I have to write to provide you with the one update that I never wanted to give: Don passed away in hospital in Turkey just before the weekend.

“His amazing partner Carrie and his beloved kids were with him until very near the end, which I know was a massive comfort to him.

“The chemo and radiotherapy had taken it’s toll and unfortunately he had recently contracted sepsis on top of everything else.

“Despite seemingly recovering after a spell in intensive care, in the end I believe it was a battle too much, even for Don.

“As you know, he fought like a tiger right throughout this awful process, as he loved life, and his family and friends worldwide so much. The last few days were pretty difficult however, and despite our devastation at losing him, it is tinged with relief that he is no longer suffering, and is finally at peace.

“I am so proud of the way my friend has conducted himself with such courage, character and bravery whilst he has been enduring so much, but I never expected anything less – it’s the kind of man he was.”

He said there was enough money left in the fund to bring his body home.

“Any money that does remain in the fund after this will be donated to the best cause possible, after consultation with the family and as many people as possible. I will provide a further update on this at a later date.”

After contracting liver disease, Don had to travel to Turkey to seek a transplant after being denied one on the NHS.

Don was a talented and popular musician and composer. As a performer, guitarist and songwriter he was in The Crowmen, CO2, Nearer The Far and Ripe. He performed with his long-time partner Carrie in current band Luna Velvet.

He was also a producer, and mastered the last two albums by The Waterboys.

Internationally, he is best known for his record label Headstrong, which has released many well-loved dance tracks.

Tributes poured in on the fundraising Facebook page. “I am so gutted, love him so much, such a talented guy, such a hole in our lives and the York music scene,” said one friend.

“He was a great guy, always made me laugh, and a superb songwriter,” said another.
