York could soon have its own wine, if plans for a city vineyard go ahead.
Proposals are in to construct a building for a new vinery to the east of the city.
The Holme Lea Winery would be based off Hull Road in Dunnington.
“The proposal would create an area for the production, bottling and storage of the wine that is to be created from the new vineyard at the smallholding,” planning documents state.
“The current use of the site is a smallholding to be used as a vineyard for the growing of grapes for wine making, and which is in the ownership of the applicant.
“The proposed development is for the construction of a new building for use in conjunction with the new winery.
“The new building is required to provide an area for the production, bottling and storage of the wine that is to be created from the existing vineyard on the site.”
Location of the vineyard
Holme Lea Vinery would be on an eight acre site to the north of the A1079, and south of Hagg Lane.
The smallholding comprises a house, Holme Lea, stables and storage buildings and the vineyard would be to the north of the proposed building.
“The development would vastly increase the efficiency and sustainability of the operations at the site,” says a design statement.
“The proposed development represents a natural growth and expansion of an existing rural smallholding.”
It would create two full time jobs
The 1,300 sq ft “agricultural type of building” would be “in an area screened by existing mature trees and hedges”.
