Police say that at an incident which saw armed officers called to a street in York has been brought to a safe conclusion.

Earlier this morning (Saturday), a Horsman Avenue in the Fishergate area was sealed off. A cordon was put in place, with tape across the entrance to the street off off Cemetery Road.

That cordon has now been lifted.

Police at the scene

Police were called just after midnight to reports of a man making threats.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Officers, including specially-trained firearms officers, responded immediately – and at about 1am they attended a house nearby on Horsman Avenue.

“A man inside the property refused to leave. Police negotiators spoke to him while a cordon was put in place to ensure there was no risk to the wider community.”

Officers entered the house, and just after 12pm the man, aged in his 50s, was arrested and taken to police custody.

“We’re extremely grateful for the patience and understanding shown by residents while we brought this incident to a safe conclusion – thank you for your support,” the spokesperson said.

There are still some officers at the scene, conducting further enquiries.

Earlier, two ambulances – an incident support unit and an incident response unit – were at the scene.

At least three police cars were seen nearby.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said at about 6am: “We’re at a property in Horsman Avenue, off the A19 Cemetery Road, following concern for the welfare of a man.

“A cordon is in place to make sure everyone’s safe while we deal with the incident.

“Please help us by avoiding the area until further notice.”
