There’s a new shop coming to a unit in York city centre that’s been left empty for three and a half years.
Confirmation that Davygate is back on the up comes with the news that the old Sports Direct shop is being fitted out for a new tenant.
Men’s fashion retailer Slater Menswear is moving in, with some great opening offers promised.
Slaters, a family run business which sells suits, shoes, coats and casualwear, is now refitting the shop with a £500K investment.
They plan to open at the end of June.
It has a ground floor entrance with a sales floor above Superdry. Sports Direct closed down and moved out of the unit in November 2019 before moving into the former BHS on Coney Street.
This will be the 27th shop in the Slaters chain, which has its headquarters in Scotland.
Why did they chose York? “We have a map in head office that we use as more of a wish list,” a Slaters company spokesperson said.
“There is a considered list of ideal places and locations for our stores and we are working our way through this list. With these locations there is a lot of research, data and information that we look for.
“When it came to York both Paul Slater and his son Mark Slater walked around to get a feel for the place and instantly fell in love, this made the decision a lot easier.”
Recruiting now
Slaters plan some big opening offers.
They will be offering a 25% off promotion and a ‘Golden Ticket’ giveaway.
“We haven’t yet finalised our Golden Ticket yet but it is likely there will be up to £1,000 worth of gift vouchers to win and some extras,” the spokesperson said.
“We will also be offering 25% off the Thursday to Sunday on the opening week.”
Who is the store aimed at? “A saying we are known for in Glasgow is ‘From no hair to grey hair’ – we like to think we have something for everyone in both casual and formal wear,” the Slaters spokesperson said.
“Our in store experience is unique, we offer free alterations with every purchase and this has allowed us to cater for women too – a lot of women will purchase suits and have them altered to fit.
“We are best known for our affordable suits but do stock brands such as Barbour, Levi’s, Wrangler and many more for a discounted price.”
The store opening will create 20 full and part time jobs. These include a department manager on a basic salary of £30,000, and a sales assistant on £22,308 – £27,483 basic.
You can see all the jobs and apply on the Slaters website.
