Music, flags, and hundreds of youngsters took over York city centre today (Sunday) for the annual Scouting and Girlguiding St George’s Day Celebration.
And this one was particularly special – as it was the 80th anniversary of the event.
Around 2,000 explorers, scouts, cubs, beavers, squirrels, rangers, guides, brownies and rainbows from York and the surrounding area, together with their leaders, took part in the procession.
They first gathered in the Eye of York. Then, at 1.20pm, it was time for the parade to begin.
Led by the Yorkshire Volunteer Band, they set off from Clifford’s Tower and paraded through the city centre to York Minster, where a service was held at at 2pm.
The return procession went along the same route – taking in Duncombe Place, Blake Street, Davygate, Parliament Street, High Ousegate, Nessgate, Clifford Street, Tower Street and the Eye of York.
Among the guests at the 80th anniversary event were the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Mrs Helen Collin, the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress and members of the city of York civic party and the Chief Constable of North Yorkshire.
