York’s new pocket park is now open.
Found on College Green next to York Minster, the area has been transformed with old unwell trees removed, new trees planted, stone seating, wildflowers and stepping stones.
The idea is it becomes “a really pleasant place for families and locals to come and enjoy,” said Andrew Lowson, executive director of the York BID.
The BID partnered with the Minster on the project.
At the opening ceremony today (Friday), the Dean of York, the Very Revd Dominic Barrington, blessed the park and cut a ribbon to welcome back the public to the area.
The Dean of York said: “This spectacular makeover has transformed College Green.
“Through the delivery of our Neighbourhood Plan, our goal is to increase public access to green space with increased planting and seating throughout the precinct.

“This new space is welcoming and accessible for residents and visitors and we hope will attract the wildlife and pollinators that are crucial for restoring biodiversity in the precinct.
“It will be fascinating to observe the park as it changes through the seasons and as it matures in coming years.”
College Green became a social gathering spot for York during the pandemic when restrictions limited people to meeting outdoors.
Back then, the BID funded temporary tables, chairs and a marquee to help residents and local businesses.
And the pocket park emerged from that.

“Even after those restrictions went, the feedback from the public was ‘this is great’, that they like eating outdoors. And what a backdrop to have in terms of the Minster!'” said Andrew.
“So we’ve done the proof of concept. And now we’ve got something which is a more permanent facility.
“It’s a pleasant place to come and dwell. Obviously, from a York BID perspective, if people are coming here, and buy tea or coffee, that’s a big support for the businesses as well.”
He added: “The area has been designed to be as inclusive as possible, with improved wheelchair access, improved seating and the addition of stepping stone features for children to play on.”
The great York weather made for an overcast and drizzly opening. “But I’m absolutely convinced that once the sun comes out, this will be a very popular place to come.
“We’re absolutely delighted with the outcome.”

Once an uninspiring area of turf, College Green has been transformed by the project, overseen by the Minster’s project manager and the team at York BID.
Leeds company PWP Design created a design where the apex of the cathedral’s Great East Window inspired the shape of the new stone bench at the centre of the park.
All of the trees, shrubs and flowers have been specifically selected to attract pollinators, and for their sensory and well-being properties. Grass and wildflower turf will provide colour and scent throughout the spring and summer.
A legacy given to the Friends of York Minster by Terry Fowler, a long time active member, funded the creation of the stone bench and the grass and wildflower turf has been provided by local company Lindum.
