More than 50 items from York Minster are on sale – including everything from a wooden sheep to a set of candlesticks!

The auction, by Wombell’s auctioneers, follows a clear up and tidy out of the Works Department building in Deansgate.

That is part of the preparations to prepare for the new development at the Minster, which aims to create a £5 million centre of excellence for heritage craft skills.

The York Minster Stores sale takes place tomorrow (Friday, 31 March). They are lots 720-776 – see more on the Wombell’s website here.

Among the items on sale are:

A wooden sheep

A carved wooden figure of a sheep 31cm long. Could it be a baa-gain?

Fire buckets

Two metal fire buckets and a painted Fire Orders board 49cm x 41cm.

Gold crosses

Four gold painted wooden crosses, missing some pieces.

A walnut cased barograph

A walnut cased barograph with label J.B Inglis & Sons, York, 40cm long. A barograph is an instrument that makes a continuous pen and ink trace of the changing atmospheric pressure on a chart. For the Minster’s weather forecasts, presumably…

A Singer sewing machine

This could be yours for only a few quid. The estimate is £5 – £10.

Oak donation box

This foliate carved oak donation box with metalwork clasps has a flat back for wall mounting, 52cm tall, 32cm wide.

A lead hopper

A lead hopper, dated 1784, 43cm wide x 26cm deep x 30cm high not including pipe.

A blue painted panel

A blue painted panel with cross keys and white roses, 87cm long x 12cm.

Four oak kneelers

Four oak kneelers – sounds like a line from the Twelve Days of Christmas.

York Minster says that they reviewed every item to ensure that it shouldn’t be sent to a museum or the cathedral archive.

All the money raised will go towards the conservation and upkeep of the Minster.
