A popular café has closed suddenly.

Millers Tearoom, based within Hollicarrs Holiday Park at Escrick, between York and Selby, shut today (Wednesday).

It has posted a message on social media at lunchtime, saying: “Sorry for any inconvenience but the tearoom will remain closed for the future.”

A message left by a manager says the staff are “broken” by the decision.

Responding to someone asking if their gift vouchers could be refunded, they said: “It will not be possible to refund any vouchers unfortunately.

“I can only apologise for this inconvenience and I totally understand your frustrations.

“We were only told this morning that this was happening. It was a huge shock to all staff and we would not of sold those vouchers if we had any idea the businesses were closing.

“I wish I could help I really do but it is out of my hands as management. We are all broken, it doesn’t seem real. We loved our jobs so much and our customers.”

Millers Tearoom when it opened at Hollicarrs

Millers opened in August 2020. Despite launching during a summer season blighted by Covid, the café appeared to thrive.

When it opened, Charlie Forbes Adam, proprietor of the Escrick Park Estate, which owns Hollicarrs, said: “This is a tremendously exciting initiative.

“The café, which is owned and run by Paul Blanshard, will be a great asset for Hollicarrs residents and visitors alike. But it will also be a valuable boost to tourism in the York and Selby area, as cafes on the A19 south of York are few and far between.”

Another Millers Tearoom, based at Raywell, East Yorkshire, has also shut suddenly.

The many customers of Millers at Hollicarrs were dismayed by the news.

“This is really sad. Something must have happened overnight as they literally posted showing their breakfast menu yesterday,” one said.

“Very sorry to hear this. You have all worked so hard and the food has always been delicious,” another said.

YorkMix has contacted Hollicarrs to ask them for a response.
