One of York’s best-known cafés has closed with a message of thanks to its staff and customers.
Chloes of York opened ten years ago on Colliergate, and closed for the last time on Saturday.
In its early years, it operated with a doorman in a smart uniform offering a warm welcome to diners.
Known for its breakfast specials, home-made cakes and tasty lunches, Chloes built up a lot of regulars alongside catering for visitors.
The café team, Denise, Victoria, Laura and Alan, had taken care to give both customers and staff plenty of notice of the closure. They said it “definitely wasn’t an easy decision to make”.
In a message on its window and posted on Instagram, they said: “It is with a lot of sadness and heartache that we have decided to close Chloes after nearly 10 years on Kings Square.
“We want to sincerely thank everyone who has interacted with Chloes in any way over the last 10 years.
“We have made many very very good friends and had a lot of lovely customers that have made it all so worthwhile for us. It has been a lovely friendly little café which is what Denise envisaged at the start and always wanted it to be.
“Finally and most importantly of all we would like to thank our Employees and loyal regulars whom we are very sure will be sad to hear this news. We will stay in touch.”
Customers wished them all the best. “I’m going to miss you all lots and lots – such a shame this fantastic place has to close,” one posted.
