A York city centre café will not reopen after being repossessed by the landlords of the building.

The Naked Deli opened in 39 Parliament Street in March 2022, although it first sought planning permission to trade there the year before.

It took over the unit that was previously home to the Flight Centre travel agents, which closed in August 2020 blaming the pandemic.

A note in the window from the lawyers of building owner Northern Retail Consortium Limited says Naked Deli has forfeited its lease, dated 1 October 2021.

It states: “Take notice that the Landlord has today re-entered 39 Parliament Street, York, YO1 8RU in accordance with the Landlord’s power under clause 4.1.1 of the Lease. As a consequence of the re-entry, the Lease is forfeited and the premises have been secured.

“And take notice that no one can lawfully enter the premises unless they have been given authorisation by the Landlord.”

Northern Retail Consortium Limited bought 39 Parliament Street for £1.65m in December 2021.

The Naked Deli is a chain founded in Newcastle in 2014.

It describes itself as “the place to go for clean, healthy, nutritious, natural foods, smoothies, gluten-free refined sugar free treats, smoothies and cold pressed juices.”

The York café never reopened after Christmas. YorkMix contacted the company to find out what was happening in January, but we didn’t receive a response.

The company website has now removed York from its list of locations.

A To Let sign from York company Blacks is inside the empty deli, suggesting it is going to be re-marketed as a shop very soon.
