Passengers were shocked when their bus was stopped and boarded by armed police in North Yorkshire today (Wednesday).

The operation involved a Coastliner 843 service, travelling from York to Scarborough

Officers stopped traffic to conduct the operation on the B1248 Scarborough Road at Norton.

It happened at around 2.50pm this afternoon.

A witness told YorkMix: “Police stopped traffic in both directions. There were both armed officers, and police with dogs.

“They went on board the bus. Clearly they were carrying out some sort of search, but I don’t think they found anything.

Where the bus was stopped

“A few minutes after they had boarded the bus they left again.”

The bus driver left the vehicle after it was stopped by police.

The witness said there was no sign of anyone being arrested. The police then allowed the driver back on board and the bus to go on its journey towards Scarborough.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Police officers stopped a Coastliner bus near Malton on the afternoon of 1 March as part of the response to a report of a woman who was making threats to harm other people who were known to her.

“It was believed she was travelling on public transport towards the coast. Officers boarded the bus, but the suspect was not a passenger.

“She was, however, arrested a short time later in the Scarborough area, having taken a taxi.

“The 19-year-old woman from Barnsley, was arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill and taken into police custody.”

We reported yesterday that the Coastliner 840, once voted Britain’s most scenic bus route, has been saved after the Government confirmed further funding to support buses.
