A new prison which is to open near York now has a name.

Found on land opposite the existing Full Sutton jail, it will be called HMP Millsike.

It has been named after Millsike Beck, a river that runs next to the new jail. The name was agreed upon by the Deputy Prime Minister, after being presented with a shortlist decided by a panel made up of Ministry of Justice representatives and local residents.

The final shortlist of options was chosen following a six-week consultation, when residents submitted suggestions for what they thought the new prison should be called.

Prisons minister Damian Hinds said: “Naming this site puts us one step closer to our new prison playing its vital role in protecting the public and cutting crime.”

Set to open in 2025, it will hold almost 1,500 prisoners and create over 500 new jobs for the local community.

HMP Millsike will be Britain’s first all-electric jail. Kier, the construction company, has employed around 50 ex-offenders in order to help them overcome their previous convictions through work.

As well as this, the prison is due to contain more classrooms and workspaces in comparison to other prisons.

Moreover, it is set to be the third out of six prisons which are being created as part of the ‘New Prisons Programme’.

The solar panels and heat pump technology will ensure that the prison will function off of a quarter of the energy as traditional prisons. In addition to keeping the amount of energy down, it will save taxpayers over £1 million a year.

Mr Hinds said: “This is a vital advancement towards our goal of creating 20,000 modern, innovative places.”.
