The A1(M) is still closed in North Yorkshire today (Thursday) as work continues to clean up the aftermath of the tanker crash.
It is shut between junction 40 and J42 on the northbound carriageway and between junction 42 and J41 on the southbound carriageway.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “The closure remains in place to allow the Highways Agency to resurface the road.”
National Highways Yorkshire said at 7am: “There are 3 miles of congestion on approach to the A1M closure northbound between J40 and J42.
“This is causing 20 mins delays above normal travel time. There are currently no significant delays southbound.”
The motorway was closed at 8.12am yesterday (Wednesday) after a tanker overturned and crashed into the central reservation at South Milford.
The driver was freed from the vehicle by firefighters and taken to hospital. The tanker split open and spilled the contents of its load across the carriageway.
The hazardous powder had to be cleaned up before resurfacing could begin.
National Highways Yorkshire say: “Safety is our first priority and every effort is being made to complete this operation in the safest possible manner.
“Due to the nature of this complex clean up work, the road is expected to remain closed through most of Thursday.”
Diversions
Road users are advised to follow the solid triangle diversion symbol on southbound road signs:
- Exit the A1M southbound onto the M1 southbound.
- Continue travelling southbound on the M1 to J42.
- Exit the M1 at J42 and at the roundabout take the 1st exit onto the M62 eastbound. (Lofthouse Interchange)
- Travel eastbound on the M62 to J32A and rejoin the A1M southbound.
Road users travelling northbound:
- Follow the above route, but in reverse
