York, take a bow.
Our city has been named as one of the most welcoming places, not just in Yorkshire, not just in Britain – but on the whole of the planet.
After collating information from more than 240 million verified reviews from travellers across 220 countries and territories, travel company Booking.com has shared its most welcoming places on Earth.
And York is number six in the top ten, and the only representative in the UK.
The city is alongside other big destinations, including San Sebastián in Spain, Mexico City and the Gold Coast of Australia.
The winners are based on “the share of accommodation partners receiving a Traveller Review Award 2023 and provide even the most seasoned traveller with bucket list inspiration for their future trips,” says Booking.com.

In it’s appreciation of York, Booking.com writes:
“Travelers can transport themselves back to medieval England when traveling to York, situated in the Northeast part of the UK.
“This city was founded by the Ancient Romans, and has been preserved by city walls. York has a great selection of things to do for any traveler, from historical, picturesque buildings to quirky tea shops, a visit to York won’t bore anyone.”
So it’s official: we’re very welcoming and not at all boring. We’ll take that.
