Firefighters tackled a blaze in York city centre tonight (Thursday).

Two crews from Acomb and the aerial ladder platform from Huntington responded to reports of a fire in Church Street at 5.55pm.

The fire was in a third floor storage room in the Mr Chippy fish and chip shop on the street.

At one point smoke could be seen coming out of one of the upper windows.

Fire crews used hose reel jets to put out the fire. One member of staff was seen outside covered in a blanket.

It caused 80% fire damage and 100% smoke damage to the third floor room.

A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Crews extinguished the fire, checked for hotspots and ventilated the entire building.

“A male was treated on scene by paramedics for smoke inhalation.

“Crews used six breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets, a positive pressure ventilation fan, thermal imaging camera, lighting, small tools and radios.

“The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.”

Police were also at the scene, and the road was closed for a while but has since reopened.

The electrics are all off in the building, but neighbouring businesses appear to be unaffected.

One of those who witnessed what happened was Michelle:

Thursday night chippy tea is cancelled. Turned the corner to the heart stopping sinking gut feeling at such a sight outside a hard working local business. Pleased to hear nobody was hurt and fire was small. Hope Mr Chippy is back serving the community soon @yorkpress @theyorkmix pic.twitter.com/iOQszlQT7u
