Police clocked one driver travelling at 117mph in North Yorkshire and say ‘Speeding clearly remains an issue in the county’.

The driver hit that speed in a 70mph zone on the A19 last week.

And yesterday (Sunday) in the torrential rain, police said: “Despite the horrendous weather conditions today, a vehicle was recorded at almost 100mph on the A59 at Blubberhouses.”

North Yorkshire Police are undertaking a crackdown on speeding as part of a national initiative.

Their speed camera van has gone to a number of locations across the county, resulting in more than 600 speeding offences being recorded in the first three days of the campaign.

  • A driver caught driving at 51mph in a 40mph zone on the A684 at Ellerbeck
  • A driver stopped for travelling at 91 mph on the A19 (a 70mph zone) near Thirsk
  • Officers stopped a vehicle travelling in excess of the speed limit on the A1M near Tadcaster, at around 10.50pm on 19 October. The driver, a man aged 30 from Nottinghamshire, was over the legal alcohol limit
  • Two vehicles travelling at 87mph in 60mph zone on A65 near Skipton: “Both were overtaking a number of other vehicles who were travelling within the speed limit”
  • A driver travelling at 117mph in a 70mph zone on the A19.

Traffic Constable Ali Hoyle from the Road Safety Team, said: “Despite us trying to raise awareness of the dangers associated with excess speeding it clearly remains an issue in the county, and hundreds of people across North Yorkshire appear to think it’s acceptable to break the law in this way.

“Speeding affects breaking distance, reaction time, and is a factor in many serious and fatal collisions – the risks to people’s lives are very real.

“As our campaign to tackle speeding on our roads continues into next week, message to anyone who speeds on the roads in our county is this – please slow down. Not only will we be watching you – but it could save your life.”
