The Aesthetica Short Film Festival are celebrating films for the whole family – with a variety of opportunities for children and young people.
At this year’s festival the film programme includes three sets of family-friendly films, which are suitable for younger viewers, teenagers and adults alike.
Do You Want To Be A Director? This workshop will introduce children ages 7-10 on how a director works to create a film, and they will be able to share and develop ideas for their future filmmaking.
If you’re interested in learning about a range of film roles, from assistant director and camera operator to clapper loader, take part in How to Make a Film, a creative workshop geared towards 11-14 year olds.
Participants will learn new skills and techniques for directing, editing and storytelling, and they will be invited to ask questions about the professional filmmaking process. These workshops are presented by Dan Farrell at Spark Media Arts, who have helped over 3000 young people produce films.
Their main aim is to encourage confidence and creativity, with their filmmaking sessions designed to provide a safe space for young creatives to express their voice, learn new skills and go on to develop new and exciting films.

Alongside these workshops, there is an amazing selection of Family Friendly films to watch at a range of venues across York. Dreams are what you make of them, so let your imagination run wild in Dreams & Imaginations.
Join Rex and his dinosaur friends as they protect humans from a meteor shower on Earth. Follow Cosmo the chameleon as he searches for a friend in a vast jungle, or search the universe with Cat and Moth, who are looking for the cosiest, comfiest place to snuggle down.
In Me & My Friend, the second selection of Family Friendly films, experience what it means to be a true friend. Nemo feels alone in Laika & Nemo, because no-one else he knows wears a diving suit… until he meets Laika, an astronaut, and discovers how it feels to spend time with someone like him.
An ordinary day with a boy and his grandad takes a dramatic turn in Harry the Hamster, and in Luce and the Rock, strange stones appear and block peaceful villagers’ doors from opening, causing chaos. Follow stories from people across the world, where one thing is certain: life is better with friends.
Young Lives looks at the connections of family and friendships. Geared towards older children, this third selection of films explores young people faced with choices, journeys and secrets, and how they navigate what life brings their way.

In Tell Me a Story, Solen tells fantastical stories to Luna, who has no idea her older sister is hiding an important secret. Explore the different paths friendships can take as two boys try to build a radio to communicate with extra-terrestrials in Signal, and a group of teenagers are reminded to be careful with secrets in The Well.
