Poetry, art, soul drumming, belly dancing, EFT tapping, music and theatre – York International Women’s Week has something for everyone.
Running from March 8-15 the week boasts a programme of more than 60 events.
Lord Mayor of York Julie Gunnell is leading the way with a series of events at the Mansion House and the rest of the city is joining in.
Below are some highlights of the week. You can also see every event in our What’s On guide.
Workshops and talks
If you feel like learning something new, then you’re in for a treat, because the week is packed full of workshops and talks.
Whether you want to watch York’s version of Loose Women, Creatively transform your life or are perhaps even confident enough to pluck up the courage to Manage change when it sweeps through your door, you’re bound to find something that suits your needs.
There are talks on the role of women in Cuba, women in Tibet and the participation of women in the Zimbabwe elections of 2013.
Arts and theatre
A performance of Anne Lister’s Ladies is a significant production that encompasses the lesbian separatism and feminist movement from the 19th century to the present day.
International human rights defenders present Women on the Front Line: Voices of Dissent at the Theatre Royal, while Union Jill and Kate Fox offer a blend of sharp satire and Yorkshire daftness with Letting Off Steam at the Basement Bar.
The poetry slam champion Hollie McNish features at the Basement Bar and Yvie Holder is joined by Jenny Zobel and Fenella Jeffers to share poetry from across the world.
There are hands on artistic opportunities, from a Soul Drumming experience to Silk Roundel Painting to a chance to join the Eco Crafters.
Health and beauty
Everybody wants to look good, right? The health and beauty aspect of the week aims to make women less self-conscious about their bodies and more health savvy.
Discover how to de-stress by learning to Tap away your tension using EFT (emotional freedom techniques). Boost your drive with Energy Medicine or just enjoy a Mini Facial Treatment.
And if you are bored with your wardrobe, then head for A Frock For FROK, clothes and accessories swap at Clements Hall in support of a Pakistan women’s charity.
Food and drink
Who doesn’t love food? No one. Exactly. The whole family will enjoy making their own smoothies at the Go bananas for fair trade?
Likewise the dads aren’t likely to say no to a Berry Meringue Stack. If you’re only likely to attend these events with the family, then I predict that these are the events for you.
Women in business
Business women and those who would like to develop their entrepreneurial skills will be interested in the national Aviva workshop focusing on Women In Business.
Look out too for a conference on Women In Archaeology held at Merchant Adventurers’ Hall.
