Shoppers thronging York’s most famous street had a lucky escape today after tiles crashed onto the cobbles.
Part of Shambles was cordoned off this afternoon (Thursday) following the incident.
The terracotta tiles fell from a pointed roof above W Hamond, the Whitby jet jewellers.
There are no reports of any injuries.
A firefighter was called to the scene at 2.17pm. A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “An officer was called to assess roof tiles hanging over a public highway. This was cordoned off and left for attendance of council maintenance department.”
YorkMix has been told that property management surveyors are on the way to inspect the problem.
