The home of a popular York sports club would be knocked down to make way for housing under plans just revealed.
But New Earswick Bowling Club say they will fight to stay in their home.
The club is based in buildings at Tanners Yard, off Huntington Road.
But now the owners of these properties, the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, has applied to demolish them. It wants to build 29 homes on the site.
A notice has gone up outside the club to say that the trust wants to flatten three buildings at the site, including the bowls club and adjoining trust offices and stores.
In a planning application, the trust says: “Demolition of the site is required for the future development of the area, which is outlined to be a proposed 29 unit residential development with associated highways and landscape design.”
New Earswick Bowls Club opened nearly 29 years ago, and has hundreds of members.
It hosts county and national bowling matches alongside its own 24 league programme of matches. The club’s finest hour came in 2016 and 2017 when it hosted the England v Scotland Test matches, screened live on TV.
The club is also the training ground for City of York Special Olympics & First York Boccia. We run regular community disability sessions.

It has eight indoor rinks.
The website says: “Aside from our excellent bowling facilities we have our green side ground floor lounge and bar area.
“On the first floor, with great views overlooking the indoor bowling area, we have a 100 seater restaurant area complete with bar and dance floor, which is available to hire for groups and classes, meetings, weddings, funeral wakes, parties and much more.”
A spokesperson for the club told YorkMix that they had been made aware of the trust’s intentions, “and are putting together a fight to try and get our lease extended which expires on 31 May”.
More on this to follow.
