A major police incident in York city centre is now over.
Police sealed off a large area around Clifford’s Tower and Castle Car Park tonight (Tuesday).
Tower Street was cut off. Businesses there, including restaurants and the Castle Snooker Club, were evacuated.
But now the operation is over, the cordon has been lifted, and businesses have reopened.
Earlier, motorists were being turned round by police. People were not being allowed in or out of Castle Car Park.
There was a large police presence, including several vans and officers stationed around the perimeter of the cordon.
One person asked by police to leave their Tower Street business said he had heard that there was a report of a suspicious package. But that is unconfirmed.
Police on the scene weren’t commenting. More as we get it.
